Originating from a preset in the otherwise unremarkable Casio MT40 keyboard, the setting was supposed to sound like Eddie Cochran's "Somethin' Else," but something wasn't quite right in the programming. This caught the attention of reggae performers Noel Davy, King Jammy, and Wayne Smith who used the preset as the bassline for their 1985 single "Under mi sleng teng".

Cue the riddim's explosion - an estimated 250 reggae records were subsequently released with the same motif. And it wasn't long before it found its way into other genres. Hip hop was quick to jump on the Casio sound, and the influence was even heard in the UK rave scene.
