Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Thanks Zoe 鈥 despite all the horrors in the news this morning 鈥 fortunately for us normal life can still go on. In fact today is World Book Day which made dressing up for school quite thrilling for my kids. My eldest went as Percy Jackson and the twins went as red riding hood and the big bad wolf. At drop off I was surrounded by characters from Harry Potter, Willy Wonka and Animal Farm, seeing this just made me feel hopeful. In today鈥檚 tech driven world encouraging my 11 year old to read has become a chore. These days the dopamine hit that gaming online provides seems to trump everything else. I have my concerns because the more time my son spends being 鈥榗onnected鈥 online the more disconnected he seems.听

The activities he use to enjoy like bike-riding, kirtan jam sessions and reading now require a lot of convincing. It鈥檚 as if devices have made him lazy which I find odd because he only has access to them on the weekend for 90 minutes. From the very start I would read to my son before bed and fortunately he still loves it. There is this moment I wait for, when he鈥檚 lying beside me where all of a sudden he takes a slow, deep breath and I can feel his body letting go. It鈥檚 at this moment that I know he鈥檚 moved out of the analytical mind - a sense of calm he describes as 鈥渆lephant tranquiliser鈥.听I feel this myself whilst meditating and urge my son to meditate every morning. Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh faith encourages meditation as a means to combat depression and connect to one鈥檚 highest self and it just amazes me that reading books can also create a powerful kind of quiet that just can鈥檛 be experienced while staring at a screen.听

The value that books provide, not only in the form of knowledge and entertainment, but the potential to soothe the nervous system and escape the over thinking mind is precious and I believe could be vital in addressing the alarming increase in anxiety and depression 鈥 especially in children who have just come out of lockdowns and are now witnessing a potential war.听While my son works on making sense of the world around him and learns to balance online and real world living I plan to read to my children for as long as possible and really doing any type of activity that will help them find comfort in this rapidly changing, sometimes terrifying and over stimulating world. 听
