Debit鈥檚 Mixtape

Verity Sharp shares a mixtape from the Mayan instrument-inspired producer and composer Debit. Plus Montreal post-punk and antiphonal birdsong.

Verity Sharp shares a mixtape from Mexican-American composer and producer Debit, also known as Delia Beatriz. A visual artist and musician since childhood, Debit started making DIY hardware and circuit-bending music in 2012. After collaborating with the groundbreaking label and collective N.A.A.F.I. in Mexico City, she moved to New York. Her work has previously fused ambient techno and dissonance with reggaeton, baile funk and other latin-based club beats. But after researching Mayan wind instruments at the archive for Mayan studios in Mexico City, Debit鈥檚 latest album, 鈥楾he Long Count鈥 intermingles the whistles, ocarinas, flutes and trumpets of the ancient past, with Artificial Intelligence techniques of the future.

Elsewhere in the show鈥 new, experimental, spoken word from London鈥檚 Lou Hill, the antiphonal bird song of Laura Cannell鈥檚 local woodland, glowing Montreal post-punk and a Sonic Youth shaped treat.
