Pause For Thought
I鈥檝e been thinking a bit about the process of unlearning and what that journey looks like in reality. At the risk of sounding narcissistic, I spent my twenties thinking I was the finished article. I searched deep within for my weaknesses, and I couldn鈥檛 seem to find any worth worrying about. Then I got married, and my wife quite rightly helped point them out!听One of the main challenges was how difficult I found communication. You know, forgetting to say I鈥檇 be home from work late, or not being open about feeling stressed, or not being vulnerable about things in life that I was finding tough. For some reason, good and clear and open communication just didn鈥檛 come naturally to me.听
听
Maybe it was because my Dad who I loved very much was a man of very few words and I sub-consciously followed suit. Or maybe it鈥檚 because I鈥檓 an introvert and don鈥檛 really like attention. But whatever the reason, I knew I wanted to be better. So I thought, right, time to take responsibility and work on my weakness. But my oh my has it been difficult. I鈥檝e spent 30 years being a certain way and that means positive change isn鈥檛 going to happen overnight. Hopefully it doesn鈥檛 take me another 30 years to make substantial change!
听
I don鈥檛 find it hard to learn new ways of improving, I just find it hard to unlearn some of the things I鈥檝e been conditioned to believe. Like how men should have a stiff upper lip and just toughen up when they鈥檙e feeling stresse. Or how if a man cries or shows vulnerability, it鈥檚 a sign of weakness. Those are the kind of ideals that I鈥檓 constantly trying to leave behind. My faith as a Christian often reminds me that I鈥檓 imperfect but with God鈥檚 help, I try to not let that deflate me. In my experience, deep positive change takes time, and so I try to remember to not be too tough on myself if it doesn鈥檛 happen as quick as I want it to. As long as I鈥檓 trying my best, maybe the journey of putting one foot in front of the other, is just as satisfying as reaching the goal.听
