Youthful gems for cello and piano

Cellist Leonard Elschenbroich and pianist Alexei Grynyuk play early cello sonatas by Beethoven and Brahms at St George's Bristol.

Nicola Heywood Thomas presents the last concert in a series given by Radio 3 New Generation Artists at St George's Bristol. Recorded last month, cellist Leonard Elschenbroich and pianist Alexei Grynyuk pair two highly original early sonatas. Written in 1796, when Beethoven was in his mid-twenties, the F major sonata is a virtuosic work for both instruments. Brahms' highly romantic first cello sonata harks back to J.S. Bach's "The Art of Fugue" in the final movement, as the instruments weave around each other in a dazzling display of counterpoint.
