The Joy of Spring

Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith with stories from the great outdoors.

Euan visits a new Scottish Association for Marine Science project which aims to be a unique ‘one-stop shop’ for environmental algal research.

The Glasgow Necropolis was the city’s first Victorian garden cemetery and has become one of the most visited graveyards in the country. Mark recently met up with tour guide Ruth Johnstone to hear about its rich history and to see some of the impressive architecture on display.

How would you define a long walk? Producer Phil’s estimate at the beginning of the week was around the 5 mile mark but, after meeting up with Julie Cribb from the Long Distance Walking Association, he’s still in shock.

Mark visits Loch Leven National Nature Reserve to see how they’re getting on building their new birdwatching hide.

Globally, the seaweed farming industry has been growing exponentially and is estimated to be worth around $15billion per annum. Euan takes a look around the seaweed academy, the UK’s first dedicated seaweed industry facility near Oban.

For our Scotland Outdoors podcast this week, Mark visit’s Glasgow’s Pollock Park to meet up with artist Alec Finlay to hear about a campaign that was launched to create a national memorial to those who lost their lives to Covid. We hear an excerpt.

Spring is finally in the air. We’re joined by nature writer Jim Crumley and Dr Kate Pickering to hear about new life and new beginnings in nature but also why it’s an opportunity for us all to reset our bodies’ circadian rhythms.

And don’t forget Euan’s mystery bird- can you guess what this week's is?
