Pause For Thought
This weekend, Muslims the world over welcomed the month of Ramadan. And 鈥渨elcome鈥 is the right word. People are really happy to greet this 鈥渨onderful guest鈥 as the month is known, congratulating each other, often exchanging gifts.听Despite this being my 35th听Ramadan I still find it a little strange to witness the enthusiasm and happiness, whilst congratulating someone that they are going to be hungry and thirsty in daylight hours for an entire month.听听Yet it does actually make sense once you鈥檝e experienced Ramadan. I鈥檒l be honest, I don鈥檛 find fasting easy. It鈥檚 physically draining and demanding, and it can make me really irritable.听听
听
Yet I love Ramadan. It鈥檚 an annual push to take stock of one鈥檚 life. Psychologists often discuss the tension in comfort versus growth. Our bodies are hardwired towards comfort 鈥 avoiding pain, and gravitating towards safety, but there can鈥檛 be growth inside the comfort zone. So there is an element within the human that pushes us towards growth and challenge鈥 It鈥檚 what makes us climb mountains, run marathons, take on difficult challenges, despite the discomfort we will knowingly face. Ramadan upends your life, but it is like a month-long course in self-reflection. It makes you realise that you can be disciplined, you can take charge of your emotions, that you are in control of your wants, not your wants in charge of you. It builds community, and gives you fresh eyes with which to be grateful for all we have. It presents an opportunity to become the best version of ourselves.听
听
Ultimately, it really is not about food or drink. That is simply an outward manifestation of trying to get closer to God. It鈥檚 about saying 鈥淚鈥檓 here God. I鈥檓 showing up. I know I mess up all the time but you are The Merciful鈥攕o please forgive me.鈥 And He will. As a Muslim, I believe that God keeps faith with human beings despite our constant failings. Ramadan is a sign that we are keeping faith with God. So for sure, Ramadan is hard 鈥 like climbing a mountain is hard. But it鈥檚 also beautiful. Stepping outside of our comfort zone, growing, becoming more鈥 these are the goals of the human spirit, and Ramadan is an annual call to help achieve them. 听
