Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Muslims the world over celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr this week. It鈥檚 a special time in the Muslim calendar, marking the end of Ramadan.听听Ramadan offers so much to individuals and to the community, in a multitude of ways. Two years of Covid have taken their toll on everyone, and we have all had to experience the important events of our lives without friends and family. So I have to say, the joy of celebrating with others was really special this year. Community is always such a huge part of the Ramadan experience, and its absence has been hard. Whilst fasting is an individual endeavour, it takes place in a communal way.听

Every year you get to feel a part of something bigger than yourself, and this year, it was really special to enjoy a number of large 鈥淥pen Iftars鈥 鈥 some of them at really extraordinary venues like the Royal Albert Hall, Wembley Stadium, and Trafalgar Square.听Eid morning this year, started for us with prayers at the park, where about 2000 people were there in festive, brightly coloured, Eid clothes. We then went to visit friends and family, ate great food, and chatted about the Ramadan just passed. Ramadan can feel like doing an intensive course, and Eid day like graduation. Ramadan has been about reaffirming one鈥檚 commitment to God, to faith, and to the community.

听It鈥檚 been about recognising that we may get lost in our everyday lives, but there has been this huge collective striving to recentre and rebalance oneself. You鈥檙e glad it鈥檚 over, because it has been difficult and tiring, however you feel like you have grown as a person, and gotten stronger, and you know you鈥檒l miss that, and the people you did the course with. So at Eid there鈥檚 a sense of achievement, but there is also a sense of loss that this period of growth has come to an end. You feel rejuvenated, and Eid is a huge day of celebration for Muslims, but perhaps surprising to some, there is also a little sadness. Like saying goodbye to a profound and beloved friend, at least until next year. But for the moment鈥 celebrations will last for a while yet, still a lot of friends and family to visit, and the novelty of day-time eating to be enjoyed!
