Dave Bayley of Glass Animals on nostalgia, being courageous and songs full of joy
Enter Arlo’s world for an hour of music, thoughts and reflections. Also, Glass Animals’ Dave Bayley joins to swap songs and stories, from Love to William Onyeabor.
Step into Arlo’s inner world for an hour of music and musings on creativity, comfort and inspiration. She’s called it Dream Fuel - a scrapbook in sound of her favourite tracks, poems, personal voice notes, field recordings and special guests.
In this episode, Arlo is joined by vocalist, writer and producer Dave Bayley from Glass Animals. The Grammy-nominated band released their debut album Zaba in 2014, and their second album in 2018 earned them a spot on the Mercury Prize shortlist. Arlo, a long-time fan of the band, collaborated with them on one of the tracks on their 2020 album Dreamland, which also featured their viral hit Heat Waves, which recently broke the record for most weeks in the Billboard Hot 100, making it the longest-charting song in history.
Dave joins Arlo in the studio to swap stories alongside some of their favourite tracks, from the nostalgic sounds of Love and Mount Kimbie to the joy-bringing bangers of William Onyeabor and Hot Chocolate. Together, they share studio stories and burp-related performance fears, reflect on how to be more courageous, and discuss what songs are on their driving playlists (or will be when Dave passes his test).
Also, Arlo shares some of the songs she’s had on repeat recently, including Loose Joints, Blood Orange and Stereolab, as well as one of her own tracks from her forthcoming album My Soft Machine. She reflects on her break away from Dream Fuel, being brave, and the feeling you get when you discover music that speaks to you.
Arlo Parks is a London born singer-songwriter and poet, who came onto the music scene back in 2019. Her debut album, Collapsed in Sunbeams, won the 2021 Mercury Prize, and in the same year she won Best New Artist at the Brit Awards.
