Angeline Morrison's songs of black British experience
Songwriter Angeline Morrison talks from Cornwall about her new album.
The best folk and acoustic music from Britain and beyond.
This week, songwriter Angeline Morrison talks about her new album.
'The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience' features new songs, written by Angeline, to tell the stories of black British lives, which have historically been overlooked.
Angeline says: 'The traditional songs of the UK are rich with storytelling, and you can find songs with examples of almost any kind of situation or person you can think of. But whilst people of the African diaspora have been present in these islands since at least Roman times, their histories are little known – and these histories don’t tend to appear in the folk songs of these islands.'
The album is produced by Eliza Carthy and hopes to offer the folk scene a new set of stories to sing.
Originally from Birmingham and now living in Cornwall, Angeline Morrison was recently awarded Cambridge Folk Festival's annual Christian Raphael Prize for emerging talent. She will perform on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Two's 'Later... with Jools Holland' on Saturday 15 October.
