Winter Showcase - Programme 3

Newcomers Geneva Lewis plays Schumann's Second Violin Sonata, cellist Santiago Ca帽贸n-Valencia performs Gershwin, plus a track from jazz pianist Fergus McCreadie.

Kate Molleson celebrates the prodigious musical talents of the current members of Radio 3's young artist scheme. In this third programme, the stentorian bass William Thomas is heard in recital at Wigmore Hall and we welcome four of the newcomers to the scheme: the New Zealand-born violinist Geneva Lewis, the Colombian cellist Santiago Ca帽贸n-Valencia, the Mercury Award-nominated Scottish jazz sensation Fergus McCreadie and the British singer Hugh Cutting, the only countertenor to have won the Kathleen Ferrier Competition.

Established over two decades ago, Radio 3's New Generation Artists scheme is acknowledged internationally as the foremost programme of its kind. It exists to offer a platform for artists at the beginning of their international careers; each year six musicians join the scheme for two years, during which time they appear at the UK's major music festivals and venues, enjoy dates with the 大象传媒 orchestras and have the opportunity to record in the 大象传媒 studios. The artists are also encouraged to form artistic partnerships with one another and to explore a wide range of repertoire, not least the work of contemporary, women and diverse composers. In recent years Radio 3's New Generation Artists have appeared at many of the UK's music festivals and concert halls. The 大象传媒 New Generation Artists scheme is not itself a prize, rather it offers a unique two year platform on which artists can develop their prodigious talents. Not surprisingly, the list of alumni reads like a Who鈥檚 Who of the most exciting musicians of the past two decades including pianists Paul Lewis, Pavel Kolesnikov, Benjamin Grosvenor and Beatrice Rana, violinists Alina Ibragimova and Lisa Batiashvili, the Belcea, Jerusalem, 脡b猫ne and Aris Quartets, singers Alice Coote and Fatma Said and the trumpeter Alison Balsom.
