Composer Anna Clyne considers our unique experiences of colour and music and how synaesthesia contributed to the music of Miles Davis, Alexander Scriabin and Duke Ellington.

Grammy-nominated composer Anna Clyne is fascinated by the relationship that exists between art and music. In this series she explores the stories, imagery, and colour of some of her favourite music and art, and how one inspires the other.

In this second episode, we delve into the deep hues of colour that exist in music. Anna describes how bright yellows, oranges and reds in the work of American artist Mark Rothko inspired her own orchestral work Color Field. She considers our unique experiences of colour and music and explores how synaesthesia contributed to the music of Miles Davis, Alexander Scriabin and Duke Ellington. We hear why the viola evokes the colour purple for Grammy-winning composer Joan Tower and what made Estonian composer Arvo Part describe listeners of his music as 鈥榩risms鈥, dividing white light into the full colour spectrum.
