'You looked like you only had one toe!'
Sean says his winklepickers were so tight that when he took them off his feet looked like they had only one toe.
"I just bought a pair of leather shoes - classic leather uppers, and soles from a retailer in gentlemen's apparel," Ron in Belfast says. "Cost a week's wages!"
"No doubt about it!" Sean says.
"Can you remember cardboard or oilcloth set inside your school shoes by your mother?" Ron says. "Oh, precious memories!"
"I remember putting cardboard and oilcloth in my shoes when they got thin, not in schooldays, but in my teenage years, when hadn't 2d to rub together and the one pair of winklepickers!"
The Eyebrowettes do not remember winklepickers.
"Winklepickers," Sean says, "were the ones with the wee pointy toes. Every fella had them. I remember my first pair. When you took your shoe off you thought you only had the one toe. They were all squeezed. The toe of them used to turn up, and you stuffed cardboard up them. You used to get a steel tip on the heel, and they would click-click-click-click. That was very fashionable! It was all right until one of the tips fell off. Then you had a click on one side, then silence. You would think you were Jake the Peg only you only had the one leg."
