The eclectic classical mix

Take time out with a 30-minute soundscape of classical favourites mixed with jazz, with music by Bach, Brahms, Bax, some Portuguese polyphony, and music for a popular computer game

Passion, pleasure and spiritual devotion sit side by side in tonight's Classical Mixtape, beginning with Uematsu's exhilarating depiction of a Great Battle in his music for the computer game Fantasian, dissolving into calming Portuguese Renaissance polyphony. A jaunty Brahms violin sonata scherzo takes you to a day at the races with a jazzed up account of the Ascot gavotte from My Fair Lady. Desire radiates from Stuart Skelton's performance of Charles Griffes's setting of Fiona McLeod's poem "Rose of the night", then J.S. Bach brings things down to earth, before the sequence ends with a joyous dance in the sunshine from Arnold Bax.
