Bassoonist Sarah Burnett with mystery, metronomes and mutes

Sarah Burnett reveals familiar and unfamiliar works in a new light, including a song transcribed for bassoon and piano, and a piano concerto inspired by the song of a starling.

Sarah Burnett is Principal Bassoon with the Britten Sinfonia and the London Mozart Players. Her choices today range from a choral piece by Tom谩s Luis de Victoria whose harmony reflects a mysterious birth to an energetic piece by J枚rg Widmann intended to be played at a very particular speed.

The bassoon features in various guises, with music showcasing Sophie Dervaux鈥檚 beautiful tone at the upper end of the instrument, Sergio Azzolini鈥檚 mastery of the baroque bassoon, and the instrument sitting alongside its wind colleagues in Poulenc鈥檚 witty Sextet for piano and winds.

There鈥檚 also a scene from an opera, Mahler at his most heartbreakingly beautiful, and Duke Ellington teaches us how to swing鈥�
