The aging Marschallin knows that, despite his protestations, one day her lover Octavian will fall for a younger woman. When Octavian is chosen to perform the presentation of the rose ceremony to the beautiful young Sophie, the Marschallin's worst fears are confirmed. With its mixture of Viennese waltzes, comedy, and the most sumptuous vocal writing, Strauss's opera has the lot.
