Order of Service - Easter Day Service from Southwell Minster

CATHEDRAL EUCHARIST

EASTER DAY

Sunday 9 April 2023 10.00am

Welcome to Southwell Minster

Welcome to our Cathedral Eucharist on Easter Day. This is always the most special Sunday of the year, as we celebrate the new life won for us by the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. This year it is extra special for us as we are delighted to be sharing it with viewers around the country via this live broadcast on ý One. Whether you are joining us in the building or at home, we hope that our worship brings you close to the risen Messiah, and that the joy of Easter will remain with you throughout this Eastertide, and beyond.

For more than 900 years Southwell Minster has been opening its doors to welcome visitors, pilgrims and worshippers. Construction of the present Minster, on the site of an Anglo-Saxon church, was begun in 1108, authorised by Archbishop Thomas of York to be a kind of ‘sub’ cathedral for York Minster (along with with Beverley and Ripon). In 1884 the Minster became the Cathedral Church of the newly created diocese of Southwell. Of particular note is the Chapter House, dating from the 13th century, which are home to the renowned “Leaves of Southwell”. These magnificent and delicate stone carvings of foliage are regarded as some of the finest examples of medieval craftmanship existing today. Earlier this year, in a poll organised by the Association of English Cathedrals, The Leaves of Southwell were voted as the nation’s number one Cathedral Treasure!

The President of the Eucharist is the Very Revd Nicola Sullivan, Dean of Southwell.

The Deacon is the Revd Dr Richard Frith, Canon Precentor.

The Sub-Deacon is the Revd Paul Rattigan, Canon Missioner.

The Preacher is the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, the Rt Revd Paul Williams.

The congregation is invited to join in all texts printed in bold.

Music at this service

The Cathedral Choir is directed by Jonathan Allsopp, Assistant Director of Music.

Today we are delighted to welcome as our visiting organist Martin Baker (who was Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral from 2000 until 2019).

The setting for the Eucharist is the Communion Service in G by Francis Jackson (1917-2022).

THE GATHERING

Please stand at the entry of the altar party

PROCESSIONAL HYMN during which the altar party enters and makes its way to the font

Jesus Christ is risen to-day, Alleluya!

Our triumphant holy day, Alleluya!

Who did once, upon the cross, Alleluya!

Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluya!

Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluya!

Unto Christ, our heavenly King, Alleluya!

Who endured the Cross and grave, Alleluya!

Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluya!

But the pains that he endured, Alleluya!

Our salvation have procured, Alleluya!

Now above the sky he’s King, Alleluya!

Where the angels ever sing. Alleluya!

PRAYERS OF PENITENCE

President

In baptism we died with Christ,
so that as Christ was raised from the dead,
we might walk in newness of life.
As we prepare to encounter his risen presence this Easter morning in word and in sacrament,
let us call to mind and confess our sins, in penitence and faith.

Silence is kept.

We have lived by our own strength,
and not by the power of your resurrection.

In your mercy, forgive us.

Lord, hear us and help us.

We have lived by the light of our own eyes,

as faithless and not believing.

In your mercy, forgive us.

Lord, hear us and help us.

We have lived for this world alone,

and doubted our home in heaven.

In your mercy, forgive us.

Lord, hear us and help us.

THELITURGY OF THEWORD

FIRST READING read by Emma Frith Acts 10: 34–43

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles

Then Peter began to speak to them: ‘I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.’

This is the Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING John 20: 1–18

Deacon

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

Glory to you, O Lord

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.’ Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes.

7

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping?’ She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.’ When she had said this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking?’ Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” ’ Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

A gospel fanfare is sounded.

Please sit when invited by the preacher.

CREED

President

Let us declare our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

THE PEACE

President

The risen Christ came and stood among his disciples

and said, ‘Peace be with you.’

Then were they glad when they saw the Lord.

Alleluia.

The peace of the Lord be always with you

and also with you.

The Deacon invites the congregation to share a sign of peace.

OFFERTORY HYMN during which table is prepared for Communion

1. Alleluya! Alleluya!

Hearts to heaven and voices raise;

Sing to God a hymn of gladness,

Sing to God a hymn of praise;

He who on the Cross a victim

For the world’s salvation bled,

Jesus Christ, the King of glory,

Now is risen from the dead.

2. Christ is risen, Christ the first-fruits

Of the holy harvest field,

Which will all its full abundance

At his second coming yield;

Then the golden ears of harvest

Will their heads before him wave,

Ripened by his glorious sunshine

From the furrows of the grave.

3. Christ is risen, we are risen;

Shed upon us heavenly grace,

Rain, and dew, and gleams of glory

From the brightness of thy face;

That we, Lord, with hearts in heaven

Here on earth may fruitful be,

And by angel-hands be gathered,

And be ever safe with thee.

4. Alleluya! Alleluya!

Glory be to God on high;

To the Father, and the Saviour,

Who has gained the victory;

Glory to the Holy Spirit,

Fount of love and sanctity;

Alleluya! Alleluya!

To the Triune Majesty.

Words: Christopher Wordsworth (1807-85) Tune: LUXEOI NEH 103

Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900)

PRAYER AT THE PREPARATION OF THE TABLE

President

Let us pray.

Creator of all,

you wash away our sins,

you give us new birth by the Spirit,

and redeem us in the blood of Christ.

As we celebrate the resurrection,

renew your gift of life within us.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the risen Lord.

Amen.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

The Lord is here.

His Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

Father, we give you thanks and praise

through your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your living Word,

through whom you have created all things;

who was sent by you in your great goodness to be our Saviour.

By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh;

as your Son, born of the blessed Virgin,

he lived on earth and went about among us;

he opened wide his arms for us on the cross;

he put an end to death by dying for us;

and revealed the resurrection by rising to new life;

so he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people.

But chiefly are we bound to praise you

because you raised him gloriously from the dead.

For he is the true paschal lamb who was offered for us,

and has taken away the sin of the world.

By his death he has destroyed death,

and by his rising to life again he has restored to us everlasting life.

12

Therefore with angels and archangels,

and with all the company of heaven,

we proclaim your great and glorious name,

for ever praising you and singing:

Choir

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts,

heaven and earth are full of thy glory.

Glory be to thee, O Lord most high.

Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

President

Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness;

grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit,

and according to your holy will,

these gifts of bread and wine

may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed,

took bread and gave you thanks;

he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;

do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper

he took the cup and gave you thanks;

he gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you;

this is my blood of the new covenant,

which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this, as often as you drink it,

in remembrance of me.

Deacon

Great is the mystery of faith:

All

Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again.

13

President

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross,

his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world;

rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension,

and looking for his coming in glory,

we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving,

we bring before you this bread and this cup

and we thank you for counting us worthy

to stand in your presence and serve you.

Send the Holy Spirit on your people

and gather into one in your kingdom

all who share this one bread and one cup,

so that we, in the company of the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints,

may praise and glorify you for ever,

through Jesus Christ our Lord;

by whom, and with whom, and in whom,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father,

for ever and ever.

All

A-men

Please sit or kneel

14

THE LORD’S PRAYER

President

Rejoicing in God’s new creation,

as our Saviour taught us, so we pray:

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD

Jesus says, I am the bread of life,

whoever eats this bread will live for ever.

Lord, our hearts hunger for you;

give us this bread always.

GIVING OF COMMUNION

Alleluia. Christ our passover is sacrificed for us.

Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

AGNUS DEI sung by the choir whilst the altar party receive communion

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world:

have mercy upon us.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world:

have mercy upon us.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world:

grant us thy peace.

Members of the congregation are invited to follow the instructions of Churchwardens to approach to receive Communion.

COMMUNION MOTET sung by the choir

Now the green blade riseth from the buried grain,

Wheat that in dark earth many days has lain;

Love lives again, that with the dead has been:

Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green.

In the grave they laid him, Love whom men had slain,

Thinking that never he would wake again,

Laid in the earth like grain that sleeps unseen:

Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green.

Forth he came at Easter, like the risen grain,

He that for three days in the grave had lain,

Quick from the dead, my risen Lord is seen:

Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green.

When our hearts are wintry, grieving, or in pain,

Thy touch can call us back to life again,

Fields of our hearts, that dead and bare have been:

Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green.

Tune: NOËL NOUVELET

French traditional melody

arr. Andrew Lumsden (b. 1962)

Words: John MacLeod Campbell Crum (1872-1958).

ORGAN IMPROVISATION

COMMUNION HYMN. Please remain seated.

1. Love’s redeeming work is done;

Fought the fight, the battle won:

Lo, our Sun’s eclipse is o’er!

Lo, he sets in blood no more!

2. Vain the stone, the watch, the seal,

Christ has burst the gates of hell;

Death in vain forbids his rise;

Christ has opened Paradise.

3. Lives again our glorious King;

Where, O Death, is now thy sting?

Dying once, he all doth save;

Where thy victory, O grave?

4. Soar we now where Christ has led,

Following our exalted Head;

Made like him, like him we rise;

Ours the cross, the grave, the skies.

5. Hail the Lord of earth and heaven!

Praise to thee by both be given:

Thee we greet triumphant now;

Hail, the Resurrection thou!

Words: Charles Wesley (1707-88) Tune: SAVANNAH(HERRNHUT) NEH 113

German traditional, 18th century

RECESSIONAL HYMN during which the altar party leaves the Minster through the west doors

Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son,

Endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won;

Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away,

Kept the folded grave-clothes where thy body lay.

Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son,

Endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won.

Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb;

Lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom;

Let the Church with gladness hymns of triumph sing,

For her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting:

Thine be the glory...

No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of Life;

Life is nought without thee: aid us in our strife,

Make us more than conquerors through thy deathless love;

Bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above:

Thine be the glory...
