A marathon effort in assisting the state
Thousands will run in this year's Belfast Marathon to raise money for charity, but why does the state depend on handouts from the public?
Thousands of runners will take part in this year's Belfast Marathon. Most of them will be running to raise money for a multitude of charities ranging from the Air Ambulance to the Hospice. Their efforts are no doubt valiant but do they signal that the state to which they pay their taxes is depending on further goodwill from the public rather than funding vital services itself? Presenter Audrey Carville in conversation with charity chief executive Agnes Lunny, former Equality Commissioner Michael Wardlow and Andrew Dougal, chair of the Public Health Agency.
