Does having a life-limiting illness dilute my rights?

A court this week was asked to decide if doctors should amputate the leg of a dementia sufferer against his wishes, or risk his death if the surgery was not carried out.

A case in Dublin's High Court this week brought into sharp focus the rights of people who don't have capacity to make their own decisions about their health

The Court was asked to decide if doctors should amputate the leg of an older man against his wishes, or risk death if the surgery was not carried out

The man, who is in his 70s, has dementia and lacks capacity to make an informed decision. However, he addressed the court by video link, telling the judge he was afraid to lose his leg.
