29/08/23 Harvest 2023, grapes in Devon, peatland restoration
After the hottest June on record and weeks of wet weather afterwards, how good will this year鈥檚 harvest be?
After the hottest June on record and weeks of wet weather afterwards, we ask how good will this year鈥檚 harvest be. It鈥檚 been like playing cat and mouse dodging the showers, and trying to get into the fields whenever the sun鈥檚 out long enough to dry the crop. Last year鈥檚 harvest was very good, 90% of it was in by now, and yields and prices were up too. This year is a different story.
Whereas wine growers across the south of England are expecting a bumper harvest this autumn. Expectations are high and some smaller producers may even need volunteers to help pick the grapes.
More than 80% of the UK鈥檚 peatlands are in poor condition. In England the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs has just given 拢16million worth of funding to 12 new landscape scale peatland restoration projects.
