Wartime Wales

During World War II, miners from north Wales reflect on their situation.

A recording from 1943 sees miners from Rhos in North Wales reach out to fellow miners in the USA. They share their thoughts on the war, poor working conditions and on the miners strikes. Don Hollenbeck presents.

A second recording from 1945 marks the end of WWII. Sir Winston Churchill gives his famous speech, we hear how the Bevin Boys in Wales found out about the end of the war in Europe and people sing in the streets on VE Day.

This programme is part of 'Radio Wales Rewind', delving into the sound archives to celebrate stories from the past.

'Radio Wales Rewind' is presented by Huw Stephens. Curated and produced by Stuart Russell.
