Weaving Words and Threads
Celebrating the poetry of Sarah Leech, an early 19th-century spinner and poet.
Helen Mark, Jonnie Crawford and Rab Lennox are joined by Dr Pauline Holland and Dr Frank Ferguson to take a look at the remarkable life of Sarah Leech, who lived in the early 1900s. She was a hard working spinner who took to poetry, becoming amongst the first female Ulster Scots speakers to be published 鈥 albeit without her permission! We鈥檒l hear excerpts of a play written about her life, her poetry (read by Lolly Spence) and a discussion around how she was a prototype feminist, of sorts.
Later, we hear 鈥楾hreeds鈥 written and read by Steve Dornan before Dr Linda Bollard talks further on some of the more unique sewing and weaving which has a connection to the Ards peninsula and became known as Ayrshire work.鈥
Finally, an invitation to celebrate the life of another remarkable Ulster Scot - John Clifford.
As always, listeners are invited to contact the programme with a good Ulster-Scots yarn or event to talk about. The easiest way to do that is by email - kintra@bbc.co.uk.
