Greece's climate war

Greece's climate war
This Summer and Autumn, Greece suffered its worst wildfires and flooding since records began. From July, fed by extreme heat and persistent dry conditions, several wildfires caused extensive damage over wide areas. Forests and parkland were burnt, and communities were endangered. Then came the floods. Storm Daniel saw a year's worth of rain fall in a single day in central Greece, home to a quarter of the country's agricultural output. Farmland was contaminated, over 100,000 head of livestock were lost, and several towns and villages were evacuated. Many have still not been able to fully return home. Between the fires and flooding, at least 45 lives were lost. In this first programme in the new series of ·¡Ã²°ù±è²¹, Ailean Beaton reports from Greece, meeting people who have suffered. With climate change creating the conditions for extreme weather events to happen more often and with greater severity, ·¡Ã²°ù±è²¹ asks if Greece is ready for what's coming.
