Episode 4
On the breathtaking Isle of Skye, Ben Fogle investigate how spiritual and religious power still survives in the face of so many visitors and sets off to discover sacred places.
In the final leg of his journey and in a Sacred Islands first, Ben Fogle can drive to his destination rather than sail.
The Skye Bridge opened in 1995 and has seen tourist numbers to the island double. Hoping to explore Skye’s spiritual heritage, he wants to know what endures today in the face of so many visitors. Hailed as one of the most stunning islands in the world, Ben soon finds himself in wild country and stops at the iconic Old Sligachan Bridge to speak with tourists ‘shipping in, taking the snap and shipping out’.
Seeking something off the beaten track and more connected to Skye’s religious past, Ben visits the atmospheric St Columba’s Isle where the Irish missionary is said to have preached in the 6th century and baptised the island’s pagan people.
Travelling north and climbing the rugged cliff tops of the Trotternish peninsula to take in the breathtaking views, Ben ponders the power of awe to root, ground and calm us down; to make us feel small.
