Sean Coyle - Bert Whoriskey's Wartime

Sean Coyle meets Bert Whoriskey, who grew up inside a vital wartime marine base in Derry.

Robert Whoriskey was nine years old when the Second World War broke out, and he watched as US Marines built a base around his home. That base, at Lisahally, was vital to the war effort. It was here that Allied submarines and ships re-armed and refuelled. It was here, in 1945, that Germany's U-Boat fleet surrendered, and it was here, inside that base, that Bert made his playground. Picture shows U-249 which was scuttled off Northern Ireland during Operation Deadlight in December 1945.
