Samhradh

Episode 3 of 3

It’s an eventful summer as Sweeny is expecting more calves than ever before to be born, but unforeseen problems lie ahead.

Tha Dòmhnall MacSuain no Sweeny, mar as fheàrr a dh’ aithnichear e, air ais a-rithist, agus an turas seo, tha sinn ga leantainn air an lot aige ann an Nis tro mhìosan trang an t-samhraidh. Tha dùbhlain mu choinneamh a h-uile ràith ach chan eil an obair làitheil air an lot uair sam bith a’ stad.

’S e samhradh mòr a th’ air thoiseach air Sweeny oir tha dùil aige ri tòrr a bharrachd laoigh a bhith air a bhreith, ach tha duilgheadasan a’ nochdadh ris nach robh dùil aige.

Le cosgaisean todhair a’ sìor fhàs, tha Sweeny ag ath-bheòthachadh seann traidisean le bhith a’ cruinneachadh feamainn bho thràigh faisg air làimh airson sgaoileadh air an lot aige.

Ceangailte ri seo agus airson na h-àrainneachd a chuideachadh, tha e a’ tadhal air tuathanas rannsachaidh taobh a-muigh Dhùn Èidinn gus faighinn a-mach an urrainn dha feamainn a thoirt don chrodh aige mar bhiadh, agus tha e cuideachd a’ tadhal air na seòmaraichean far a bheil iad a’ tomhais na h-ìrean meatan a tha an crodh a’ cruthachadh. ’S e fosgladh sùla a th’ ann dha!

An dèidh cnap-starra no dhà, tha Sweeny a’ tilleadh gu fèilltean reic nan uan ann an Inbhir Pheofharain, ach chan eil e misneachail gum faigh e prìsean math agus dh’ fhaodadh seo buaidh a thoirt air mar a thèid an còrr dhen bhliadhna aige.

Donald Macsween, or Sweeny, as he is best known, is back again, and this time we follow him on his croft in Ness during the busy summer months. Every season poses its own challenges but the daily work on the croft never stops.

It’s an eventful summer ahead as Sweeny is expecting more calves than ever to be born, but unforeseen problems lie ahead. With the cost of items like fertiliser rising constantly, Sweeny decides to revive an old tradition by collecting seaweed from the nearby beach to take back to spread on his croft. He visits a research farm outside Edinburgh to find out if seaweed can be fed to his cows, and also sees the chambers where methane levels from cows are measured. An eye-opening visit!

After some terrible setbacks, Sweeny goes to the lamb sales in Dingwall but is not confident he will get good prices. The sales will have a huge effect on how the rest of his year goes.
