Caring for Creation

Claire McCollum meets Christians putting faith into action to care for the environment in different ways and discovers cutting-edge technology at a Salvation Army recycling centre.

Claire McCollum meets Christians putting faith into action to care for the environment in different ways. In Northamptonshire, she discovers the remarkable technology at the heart of the Salvation Army鈥檚 processing centre for recycling clothes. The facility is one the largest of its kind in the UK and is helping to drastically reduce landfill waste. To witness it in action, Claire brings a bag of her own preloved items and watches them fly through a Fibersort machine, a clever automated system that uses infrared cameras and jets of compressed air to separate textiles. Claire speaks with Major Heather Poxon about the vision behind the new facility and how it stems from the Christian ethos of the organisation.

Also, we hear from Dr Annabelle South, a scientist who developed an ecoscheme for Christians after witnessing first-hand the effects of climate change during field work in Africa. We meet Jon and Fiona, early adopters of the scheme, to find out how they鈥檝e adjusted their lifestyle and how the sacrifices remind them of their duty to care for creation.

Claire visits Animals in Need to meet Annie Marriot, a Christian who believes God put her on planet Earth to care for all creatures great and small. During the winter months, the charity have an influx of hedgehog rescues, and Annie explains what more people can do to help make their gardens more welcoming for them.

Throughout the programme, hymns feature from congregations across the UK, celebrating the beauty of God鈥檚 creation, including a special performance from the Eden Project in Cornwall.
