大象传媒 Philharmonic in Bruckner and Sibelius
The 大象传媒 Philharmonic, conducted by John Storgards, in Bruckner's Fifth Symphony. A magical tribute to Sibelius's En Saga and Sibelius's own tone poem complete the programme.
The 大象传媒 Philharmonic and their Finnish Chief Conductor, John Storgards celebrate the bicentenary of Bruckner's birth with a performance of his life-affirming Fifth Symphony. Sadly he never heard this uncompromisingly optimistic music played by an orchestra.
The programme opens with music by John Storgards's compatriot, Lotta Wenn盲koski and was commissioned to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Sibelius's birth. 'Verdigris' is the layer of greenish haze that characterises mature bronze statues; in this tribute to Sibelius's music she draws inspiration from his tone poem 'En Saga', aspiring she says, to "write new layers of musical history", energised by musical sense of place and his string writing. 'En Saga' completes the programme; the title translates as "fairy tale" but there isn't a story here - Sibelius said he felt the piece created an atmosphere which was a "revelation of his own character" and the music is imbued with a rhythmic propulsion but also a dark melancholy.
