Tom Service talks to violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter
Tom Service is joined by violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, uncovers the percussive world of the handpan, and plays the best classical music to start your weekend.
Start your weekend with Tom Service, as he plays the best classical music for your Saturday morning.
This morning from 9.30am, Tom is joined by the violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. One of the great violinists of our time, as a teenager the conductor Herbert von Karajan called her "the greatest musical prodigy since the young Menuhin". Now in her 60s she continues to influence the future of classical music, whether it's through her championing of new music (she's given world premieres of over 30 works), nurturing new talent through her orchestra Mutter's Virtuosi or using her musical voice for philanthropy.
She talks to Tom about her career and how and why she uses music to try and make the world a better place.
After 11am we answer the questions about music you've always wanted to ask - this morning Tom asks "Why are some violins quite so expensive?" and enlists the help of violin expert Matthew Huber, acoustician Claudia Fritz and violinist Ray Chen to find out about the magic and myth of the world's finest instruments.
And after 11.30, Tom discovers the cosmically beautiful world of the the Handpan. With its roots in the steel pan, looking a little like a small UFO and with an intoxicating sound - the handpan is one of music's newest inventions. A new concerto for Handpan and Orchestra is set to be premiered by Chineke! Orchestra and percussionist Rosie Bergonzi. Rosie is passionate about the instrument's expressive and educational potential and pops in to show Tom the ropes. Plus we hear from composer Cassie Kinoshi on writing for this exciting new sound.
