Music, chat and Laurie Anderson
Pioneering musician and artist Laurie Anderson joins Stuart Maconie to share her 'First, Last and Everything' and discuss her forthcoming new album.
Stuart Maconie presents solo, with a feast of great music and chat.
Today he hears from pioneering experimental musician and artist Laurie Anderson. Laurie joins Stuart to discuss her latest album and share her 'First, Last and Everything' - that’s the first record she owned, the most recent one she's enjoyed and the record that means ‘everything’ to her.
Laurie – whose work encompasses music, visual and performance art, photography, poetry and film - became widely known outside the art world in 1981 with her single ‘O Superman’, which reached number two in the UK singles chart and appeared on her debut studio album ‘Big Science’. She is also known for her use of technology in art, developing creative tools such as the ‘Talking Stick’ which she has used in her own work. She was appointed NASA's first artist-in-residence in 2002 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year. Laurie’s latest album ‘Amelia’ is inspired by renowned female aviator Amelia Earhart and her last flight.
Laurie tells Stuart more about her forthcoming new album and shares some of her own music memories, including roller-skating to Mr Big Stuff by Jean Knight. They also discuss Laurie’s early single ‘O Superman’ recently becoming a viral hit on Tik Tok and why William Basinski's work ‘The Disintegration Loops’ is so important to her.
Also on the show... long-running feature ‘The Chain’, which gives listeners the chance to pick a track that links in some way to the last. The list now contains over 8000 songs.
With a selection of music old and new to get the weekend started.
