Welshman Josh Tarling was among the favourites in the men鈥檚 road cycling time trial, while world silver diving medallists Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen were vying to become Britain鈥檚 first female Olympic medallists in the sport since 1960.

Four of the opening day鈥檚 14 titles were decided in the swimming pool, including a 400m freestyle clash of the titans as defending champion Ariarne Titmus faced Katie Ledecky and Summer McIntosh. Another global star, Britain鈥檚 two-time Olympic champion Adam Peaty, sought a place in the 100m breaststroke final.
