Presenter Clare Balding is poolside as British swimmer Adam Peaty seeks to emerge from what he describes as ‘three years of hell’ with a third straight Olympic 100m breaststroke title.

Peaty has endured injury and mental health issues since the Tokyo Olympics but returned to action this year with a fresh outlook and has the chance to become just the second man, after Michael Phelps, to win three Olympic gold medals in the same swimming event.

Max Litchfield is another British swimmer on the comeback trail after personal problems, and his recent world silver in the 400m individual medley has raised hopes of a first Olympic medal in the event after coming fourth in each of his two previous attempts. The outstanding favourite though is Leon Marchand, France’s current world champion, world record holder and face of the Paris Games.
