Two sisters from Brynamman, Carmarthenshire, face the challenge of their lives as they arrange a star-studded Wales v England charity football match. Will they succeed?
Sisters Katy Yeandle and Emma Rees, who are from Brynamman, on the edge of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), have set themselves an almost impossible task. They want to arrange an all-star charity football match between Wales and England. They have to find a venue, enlist celebrities and famous faces to play and find two big-name managers, not to mention the fact that they need to sell thousands of tickets. The only problem is that neither of them knows anything about football!
Katy and Emma have their sights set on some of the nation’s biggest stars and won’t take no for an answer. Top of the list are footballers Ashley Williams, Joe Ledley and Jazz Richards – three of Wales’s ‘Dream Team’ which reached the semi-finals of the 2016 Euros – as well as former Welsh manager Chris Coleman. They are also targeting players like Adebayo Akinfenwa and Nathan Dyer, rugby stars Shane Williams and James Hook, as well as celebrities like Roman Kemp and Joe Swash. But will they all turn up on the day?
There’s plenty of laughter and tears as we follow the sisters pulling out all the stops to make the event a success. Driving them on is the desire to raise as much money as they can for a special charity established in memory of Katy’s son Joseph.
In December 2021, Joseph lost his life to neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. He was just three years old. The charity set up in his honour raises money to help other families fundraising for life-saving or life-changing treatment. This football match is by far the charity’s most ambitious project yet.
The sisters have also roped in the community of Brynamman to make ‘wiggly vests’ – clothing for children who are having treatment that means they have to have a Hickman line for medication. These vests allow them to play and run around without causing a problem with the line.
As match day approaches, the pressure mounts. Will they be able to sell enough tickets at the iconic Swansea City stadium? Will all the players turn up? Can Katy and Emma make this happen – and who will win, England or Wales?
