Plough on!
Ploughing sibling rivalry in Hillsborough, bog butter found in Donegal and soil health comes to the North West.
Presenter, Nicola Weir, travels to Hillsborough to talk to identical twin brothers, David and Sam Gill, about the skill involved in competition ploughing. They are both World Champions and have dominated the sport for decades. So what makes an expert plougher, what are the judges looking for and how is the Ploughing Academy of Northern Ireland helping new blood to take on those titles? A new global threat is on the rise – that of antimicrobial resistance. Queen’s University and the Institute of Global Food Security is leading the way into how we negotiate away from overuse to avoid global disaster in future years. A one meter slab of bog butter has been found in County Donegal on the farm of Michael Boyle – it’s one of the largest finds of bog butter and archaeologist Paula Harvey tells about the latest find and how it tastes! The soil nutrient health scheme is sampling soil in every field in Northern Ireland and Dr Rachel Cassidy is calling on farmers in the North West to sign up and reap the benefits. Finally, it’s back to Donegal to speak to Six Nations Ploughing Champion Alan Simms about lifting the title for Ireland.
