Joan as Police Woman: The musical ups and downs of my life
Musician and songwriter Joan Wasser shares the music that has soundtracked her life and how her own experiences and emotions are woven into her songs.
Musician and songwriter Joan Wasser, known by her moniker 'Joan as Police Woman', shares the pivotal moments that have made her the multi-talented artist she is today. Talking to Nemone, who combines her roles of DJ and qualified psychotherapist, Joan dives deep to share her story and the songs that have moved her and soundtracked the ups and downs of her eventful life. Joan also reveals how personal experiences, thoughts and emotions are woven through her own work. It鈥檚 a chance to understand her relationship with music more intimately and to learn more about how she has used sound to communicate and how she has reached the place we meet her in as she releases her tenth studio album, 'Lemons, Lime and Orchids'.
In this programme, Joan talks to Nemone about growing up in an adoptive family and meeting her biological parents for the first time as a young woman. She talks openly about the tragic death of soulmate and fellow musician Jeff Buckley at such a young age and how she got through the darkest of times. Joan talks about studying the violin and how she eventually found her voice. She also shares how she writes her own songs and the joy of making beats. Joan's story is one of strength, resilience, overcoming addiction to get sober and reaching a happier place in life. Featuring music from the film 'Grease', Mahler's Symphony No. 2, Black Flag, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Joan's previous band The Dambuilders, Jeff Buckley, ANOHNI and the Johnsons and Mahalia Jackson.
