Ustatshakirt Ensemble
Kathryn Tickell with the best new roots-based music and highlights from a concert by the Ustatshakirt Ensemble of Kyrgyzstan recorded at the Edinburgh Festival.
Kathryn Tickell presents the best new roots-based music from across the world and extracts from a concert by the Ustatshakirt Ensemble from Kyrgyzstan, recorded by the Aga Khan Music Programme at this year's Edinburgh Festival.
Kathryn talks to Aga Khan programme director Fairouz Nishanova who tells us the story of The Ustatshakirt Ensemble who are part of the Ustatshakirt Centre, which was founded by the Aga Khan Music Programme to train a new generation of Kyrgyz musicians and revive musical traditions that were stifled by the Soviet regime. In this concert the multi-instrumental players perform on traditional instruments such as the kyl kiyak (two-stringed fiddle), the temir komuz (jaw harp) and the sybyzgy (end-blown flute) and create a truly magical sound.
