How exactly have Ulster-Scots figures, their language and culture influenced so much of what we in Northern Ireland and beyond know and appreciate? Jennie Browne and Jane Rea are going to find out – on this episode focusing on what they’ve done for… the written word!
The two chat renowned Northern Irish writers Jan Carson and Michelle Gallen - both of whom have littered their work with colourful Ulster-Scots words and phrases. There’s a catch up with professional storyteller (aka pro-bletherer!) Billy Teare and a conversation which leads to a deep dive into the life and work of criminally underrated writer Ian Cochrane.
Best of all - following a book recommendation from local historian Steve Dornan - our dynamic duo meet up with poets and writers and form an impromptu book group, discussing the work of John Hewitt. Not their fault the best place for that happens to be a pub!
As for our presenters - Jennie Browne, half Northern Irish and half Caribbean, has always had a fascination with her identity and sense of place. But she feels there is a large Ulster-Scots shaped hole in her knowledge. So -with the guidance of Ulster- Scots presenter Jane Rea, Jennie plans to explore the Provence, get her hands dirty and learn about a community who have given us so much.
