with Tony Kearney
Is the annual act of remembering still important? How to heal a divided nation in the aftermath of the US elections. And what's behind our need to dig deep into our family history?
On Remembrance Sunday, Lisa Williams, author and founder of the Edinburgh Caribbean Association, takes us on a special walk around Edinburgh to remember and honour those who have made sacrifices serving their country, but whose stories are often missing from the history books.
Tony Kearney speaks to conductor and church musician Iain McLarty about a new Iona Community project to decolonize some of the music from around the world which has been published and recorded by the Community’s Wild Goose Resource Group. Iain explains exactly what that means and what it will entail.
From standing vigil in St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, where the late Queen Elizabeth lay in state for two days, to being on board HMS Enterprise as naval chaplain as it rescued migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean from Libya, Reverend Dr Marjory MacLean shares her spiritual life with Tony. Her recent book ‘Oh, All Right Then: Stories from a Varied Ministry’ draws upon her wealth of experience as a Church of Scotland minister, from Orkney to Kabul.
Tony delves into some of the news stories of the week from an ethical and philosophical perspective, with Bob Davis, Professor of Religious and Cultural Education at the University of Glasgow, former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, The Very Reverend Sally Foster-Fulton, and Rodge Glass, a writer who grew up in the Jewish faith.
They discuss the importance and relevance of Remembrance Day in 2024, and if we need to re-assess this national act of remembering and honouring.
The US elections and Donald Trump’s decisive win have dominated news headlines this last week. Was it a vote for strongman politics, or a rejection of liberalism? And where does America go from here – especially as the nation is deeply divided - how does it begin to heal?
And the panel share their thoughts on the new series of ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 4 podcast ‘The Gift’, which explores the unexpected consequences of doing a home DNA test. They look at what is behind our deep need to know where we came from.
