Anna Massie brings the highlights from Germany's largest folk festival, Rudolstadt, featuring a live concert from Ryan Young with Owen Sinclair on guitar, recorded in July 2024.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) host concerts throughout Rudolstadt festival, showcasing an eclectic line-up of bands chosen by public service radio stations across Europe. Representing Scotland this Summer, fiddle in hand, Ryan Young.

The concerts are recorded and made available to radio producers across the world as part of the Euroradio Concert Exchange music sharing initiative.

Music needs no translation in order to build bridges across borders and between generations.

Anna hears from some of the musicians that were born to live out of a suitcase and build bridges with their instruments, and we explore whether it is possible to treasure our own musical traditions along the journey.

We hear about the Wonder Vogel youth movement, celebrating nature, natureism and bringing back Germany's folk revival - and researcher Maud Start follows the sound of a fiddle through a dark, empty hotel to find a musician who's been dredging baroque rhythms from the archives to save them from being forgotten.

Plus live music from bands from Ukraine, Austria, Germany, Ireland, Wales and beyond!
