Winter Solstice with Shovel Dance Collective

Verity Sharp presents a winter solstice session with nine-piece folk group Shovel Dance Collective.

Verity Sharp shares a special session with the nine-piece folk group Shovel Dance Collective, who conjure seasonal tales through music and sound on the eve of the winter solstice.

Formed in 2019, the group鈥檚 members unite around a shared love of folk music鈥檚 power to transport and connect, its ability to 鈥減lace you in a great chain of everyday life鈥, forging intimate connections with 鈥減olitical and emotional actions, past and present.鈥 Their two albums mine folk archives, bringing to light ballads and songs which hold queer histories, proto-feminist narratives, and the voices of working people; whilst their EP series Offcuts and Oddities assemble unfinished moments, cassette tape experiments and field recordings from spaces around England, including church pews, fields, and London鈥檚 canal-sides. For this exclusive session, the collective bring their trademark experimental approach to seasonal songs and themes.

Elsewhere in the show, Verity marks the eve of the longest night of the year, holding vigil through the dark with tracks from Bj枚rk, Felicia Atkinson and Rosalie Sorrels.
