Organic farming at Ballylagan Organic Farm, sniffing out mink in Lough Ree, young auctioneer takes over County Galway mart, and does the UK’s oldest horse live in Newtownards?
Presenter, Nicola Weir, travels to Straid just outside Ballyclare in County Antrim to visit Patricia Gilbert at her Ballylagan Organic Farm. She raises pigs, sheep and beef there and it’s butchered in her own butchery on the farm. She says it was a big decision to turn organic in the early 90s but says she’s very proud at what she and her husband, Tom, have achieved. Nicola hears the latest results from the Soil Nutrient Health Scheme and talks to Owen Murphy, about the work of the Conservation Detection Dogs at Lough Ree. He has trained Lorg, his Labrador Retriever, to sniff out mink that is impacting on bird numbers there. Then it’s off to County Galway to speak to Saoirse Loftus who at just 23 years old has auctioneered her first mart followed by a chat with William Mayne from East Belfast about being crowing the UK’s Best Drink Producer at the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Farming Awards. And from the youngest auctioneer to the oldest horse in the UK – does it live in Newtownards? Well it might and we speak to owner Cerys Brown about the life long friend she’s found in her 45 year old horse, Roana.
