Elizabeth Alker introduces a complete performance of Handel's Messiah featuring a starry line-up of soloists alongside the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and six different choirs directed by John Butt at this year's ´óÏó´«Ã½ Proms.
After a shaky start in Dublin 300 years ago Handel's masterly oratorio has become one of the best loved and most frequently performed choral works in the repertory - and a firm Christmas favourite. This performance, featuring the 1789 re-orchesration by Mozart, complete with trombones, clarinets, horns and flutes, was made at this year's ´óÏó´«Ã½ Proms as part of 'Choral Day' and it captures all the joy and public affection that this great work inspires.
