Report 2024
The Earthshot Report takes a deep dive into previous Earthshot finalist stories, looking at the global picture and showing the progress made towards a sustainable future.
The Earthshot Report is the definitive review of the progress we have made in protecting and restoring our planet in 2024.
Introduced by Prince William and hosted by Hannah Waddingham, the report brings a fresh, entertaining take on global good news stories, solutions and trends that show the progress the world is making towards a stable, thriving future.
The report uses the five Earthshots as its backbone, taking a deep dive into previous Earthshot finalists’ stories to highlight how they are scaling up their innovative solutions and showcasing the collective impact they are having on the planet, as well as looking at the global picture and how we are progressing toward a sustainable future.
In the Fix Our Climate category, we hear how the charge is on for renewables in 2024, but that their expansion comes with its own problems, including how we best utilise space. We travel to Colorado, USA, to meet Byron Kominek who runs Jack’s Solar Farm, an agrivoltaics solution that ‘harvests the sun twice’, firstly by using it for solar energy and secondly by growing crops in between the panels at the same time.
In the Protect and Restore Nature category, the knowledge and wisdom of indigenous peoples cannot be overstated, and we visit the Amazon Sacred Headwaters Alliance in Ecuador, where the Sharamentsa community are forging a new, legal route to enshrine protection for nature in law across the globe.
Meanwhile, Tom Crowther’s Restore project is linking up biodiversity-monitoring projects across the world and innovating with new ways to measure and track variety in the living world.
One of the big trends in the Build a Waste-Free World category in 2024 has been the move towards alternative materials. 2022 Earthshot winners Notpla have gone from strength to strength with their seaweed-based plastic alternative, whilst Ananas Anam are using the waste from pineapple farming to create clothes and fabrics.
In the Revive Our Oceans category, we catch up with 2021 finalist Pristine Seas, which is part of the push to protect 30 per cent of global waters by 2030 by monitoring, measuring and recording the wildlife in some very special parts of the ocean.
Finally, we travel to Africa to showcase how two previous Earthshot finalists, Roam and Mukuru, who are blazing a trail in the Clean Our Air category, with innovations in electric transport and home cooking respectively.
Staying in Africa, we see how the Earthshot Prize Awards 2024 took over Cape Town in a celebration of African youth and innovation, showcasing the 15 new finalists for this year’s prize.
Hannah Waddingham wraps the documentary up at Shakespeare’s Globe in London by reflecting on what we can all do to help project the globe itself.
The Earthshot Report is an inspirational invitation to sit back and enjoy an hour of planetary optimism.
