Musician Cosmo Sheldrake and Life on Jura
Helen Needham with musician Cosmo Sheldrake and Mark and Rachel spend a day on Jura.
Helen Needham goes on a wild and wonderful musical journey with musician and composer Cosmo Sheldrake. Cosmo is an absolute wizard when it comes to using the sounds of nature to create music, so much so he is officially declaring nature as a co-creator of his work.
And Mark and Rachel spend a day on the Island of Jura. We get a sense of life on the Ardlussa Estate, where the Fletcher family has lived for generations. These days, the Estate is home to a gin distillery, and the deer stalking attracts visitors from far and wide. We hear what it's like living in a remote location and how Jura is thriving in terms of community and population.
Rachel heads out with Grant Rozga from Jura Guided. Grant is a Jura native who also has a croft. He takes Rachel to one of the island's many beautiful beaches and tells her how Jura has changed over the years he's lived there.
In the far north of Jura, quite a distance from the end of the public road, is a house called Barnhill. It's here that George Orwell wrote his novel 1984, which celebrated its 75th anniversary this year. Author Les Wilson has written a book about Orwell and his time on the island and he tells Mark what brought Orwell there and what impact Jura had on him and his writing.
