Simon Rattle at 70

Hannah French talks to conductor Sir Simon Rattle as he celebrates his 70th birthday.

Hannah French shares a sparkling selection of classical music for Saturday morning, including works by Anna Clyne, Boccherini, Handel and Sibelius.

As the conductor Sir Simon Rattle celebrates his 70th birthday, Hannah meets him to find out how he鈥檒l be celebrating the big day. Having led the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra and now the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, they reflect on the path his conducting career has taken and discuss how the art of programming concerts is a lot like making a great meal, especially when there鈥檚 lime involved.

We also hear about a new piece by violinist, composer and sound artist Ruby Colley called 鈥楬ello Halo鈥, which she has developed alongside her brother Paul Colley, who is neurodivergent and non-speaking. The piece explores the repertoire of sounds and gestures Paul uses to communicate and the musical nature of that communication. The work combines recordings of Paul and live violin alongside the vocal ensemble Exaudi and will premiere at Kings Place in London and Liverpool Philharmonic in February.
