Bagpipes, Photofit and Toaster Radio
Nigel Havers presides as five sellers bid on items, including a Danish 1960s lampshade, a set of bagpipes, a police photofit game, a toaster radio and a ride-on, vintage, Austin toy car.
Nigel Havers welcomes five more sellers to the Bidding Room, where they try to sell items to professional dealers who are on the lookout for interesting pieces, with help from expert Simon Bower.
First through the doors is Marlene from Aberdeenshire, with a Danish lampshade she bought at a recent auction. Based on a 1960s design by Werner Schou, Simon thinks this may be a later model, but will age detract from its beauty in the dealers' eyes?
Next to make a rousing entrance into Edinburgh HQ is piper Dean, with a set of bagpipes he鈥檚 recently had reconditioned. He treats the dealers to a performance, but will any of them pipe up with the amount he wants to be paid for his specialist instrument?
Our third guest is Chloe, with a vintage parlour game called Physogs. It was designed by Jacques Penry, who also created the photofit system for the Metropolitan Police in the 1930s. Will any of the dealers be charmed by its novelty value, decide that their face fits and bid on it?
Next in is Paula with a perplexing piece of kitchenware. Is it a toaster? Is it a radio? Is it a combination of the two? Made in the 1950s out of Bakelite, like many Bidding Room beauties, it鈥檚 been hidden in a loft. With a host of mid-century dealers waiting, can Paula convince them to tune in and shell out for her kitsch kitchen piece?
Last to arrive at our Leith theatre base is Andy with a battery-operated, ride-on, vintage, Austin toy car. An impulse buy in a flea market, Simon thinks it may have been built by hand. It鈥檚 an instant hit with dealer Ian, but will any of the others overtake his bid?
The dealers are Ian, Estelle, Moses, Lucy, Viki, Jacqui, Jo and JB.
