Peter Gabriel at the 大象传媒

From classic hits to pioneering sounds and collaborations, this is the story of the great singer-songwriter and activist as he reaches the age of 75. All told in 大象传媒 interviews.

As we celebrate his 75th birthday, with his usual humour and self-deprecation, Peter Gabriel discusses his early releases Solsbury Hill, Games Without Frontiers and Shock The Monkey. These singles, from his identically self-titled debut solo albums, came after his surprising departure from Genesis just as they were enjoying worldwide success. Peter also acknowledges the breakthrough 1986 landmark album So, his first with a proper title in this country. It changed his life, transforming him from prog rock cult artist into an MTV generation worldwide superstar, pioneer of world music and hugely respected cultural and political figure. Peter also remembers the unexpected recording history behind Sledgehammer and the endurance test that was the video shoot, with the talented team who went on to make Wallace and Gromit. Peter鈥檚 career has always combined huge hits (backed up by ground-breaking videos and concepts) with extraordinarily personal, experimental, haunting and memorable songs such as Biko, Don鈥檛 Give Up, Digging In The Dirt, San Jacinto and In Your Eyes. Peter talks about his participation in the OVO show at the Millennium Dome, singing with an orchestra, his film work on Babe 2 and Wall-E and his contribution to Nelson Mandela鈥檚 46664 campaign. He remembers his idea of lying flat and being passed around the auditorium in gigs and also, when he sang from the back of a venue, an over-enthusiastic security worker not letting him back onto the stage at his own concert. Brian Pern, the actor and comedian Simon Day鈥檚 parody of a very similar character, makes him see the funny side of his life.
This new compilation of archive broadcasts and key tracks comes from decades of 大象传媒 radio, online and television interviews with Peter, conducted by Matt Everitt, Bob Kilby, Tom Robinson, David Jensen, Andy Peebles, Ro Newton, Johnnie Walker, Steve Wright, Tim Smith, Richard Skinner, Jools Holland, producer Mark Simpson, Andrew Marr, John Wilson and OJ Borg.
