Fiona Talkington showcases the best performances by 大象传媒 orchestras, choirs, ensembles and other great performing groups from Europe and around the globe.

The week begins with a live concert from London鈥檚 Wigmore Hall given by one of the very first 大象传媒 Radio 3 New Generation Artists, pianist Steven Osborne. At the heart of his recital is Schubert鈥檚 sublime final piano sonata, whose spirituality is anticipated in the three miniatures that precede it: Myra Hess鈥檚 soulful take on Bach, and two short pieces by fellow Scots composers Judith Weir and James MacMillan.

A trio of more recent New Generation Artists feature throughout this week on Classical Live, with two concerts recorded exclusively for us at last year鈥檚 Belfast International Arts Festival. The Z.E.N. Trio is made up of three world-class soloists who met while on Radio 3鈥檚 flagship talent development scheme: violinist Esther Yoo, cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan and pianist Zhang Zuo (aka Zee Zee). Today they perform the first of Rachmaninov鈥檚 Elegiac Trios.

The Belfast connection continues in the realm of orchestral music, with the Ulster Orchestra taking the lead in our week-long focus on Sibelius. But it鈥檚 Sibelius's compatriots in the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra who provide our centrepiece today at 3pm - the expansive Symphony No. 2.

And in the lead-up to the 25th anniversary celebrations of the New Generation Artists scheme next Monday, each day this week we feature an alumnus as the soloist in a concerto with a European orchestra. Today, French pianist C茅dric Tiberghien joins the Li猫ge Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for Ravel's Piano Concerto in G.
