In 1913 Gertrude Bell travelled across Arabia.

'16th December 1913; today I return to the desert and the world must get along without me for a bit. As far as I can make out there never was a year more favourable for a journey into Arabia. Occasionally my eyes strain to catch a glimpse of the future, and sometimes I do wonder whether I shall come out of the adventure alive.'
