Thailand rice subsidies

Despite the rise in food prices last year, the Thai government's rice policy may cost it dear.

The dramatic rise in food prices last year were a boon for the world's biggest food producers - so in Thailand, for decades the biggest rice exporter, farmers should have been riding high. But as our South East Asia Correspondent Jonathan Head reports, misguided government policy in Thailand has left most of its farmers mired in poverty, and cost the taxpayers huge sums of money.
